Manchester United eventually ended their
winless streak with a 2-1 victory over a battling Swansea side at Old Trafford.
The first half was extremely dire, and
reflected United’s dismal performances during the season, with very little
creativity apart from a couple of attempts from Juan Mata. The Old Trafford
crowd was very subdued and appeared restless, unsurprisingly given the recent
statistic that United have scored the fewest amount of goals at home out of all
92 league clubs this season.
However the second half showed signs of
improvement, assisted by the lively Martial’s opener. The 19 year old tormented
the Swansea defence all match, and the right flank saw similar attacking threat
from Ashley Young. Both men were constantly testing the full backs and
providing teasing crosses which led to goals from either flank and showed much
improved direct attacking threat which has been seriously lacking in United
this season. Wayne Rooney got a skilful
winner, his first league goal since October, which may improve his own
confidence going into 2016.
The Reds’ mental strength was tested after
Sigurdsson dragged Swansea level around the 70th minute mark, but by
responding up the pitch showed character and resilience to grind out a win.
David De Gea made a superb stoppage time stop from Ashley Williams whilst
Swansea goalkeeper Fabianksi was unfortunate to see his header fly past the
post.
Overall it was an improved United display
but many more will be needed in the new year to ease the pressure on Louis Van
Gaal and the team.
