Why United Shouldn't Appoint Jose Mourinho

Author: Umeh

The 52-year old's dismissal at Stamford Bridge has been the talk of the football world in the last 48 hours - and predictably so - because of his influence in the sport around the world. One of the trending stories in the camp of a huge swathe of United fans is for the club to appoint Mourinho. Although, not every supporter of United wants Jose at the club (like myself).

In this article, I'll be pointing out 4 key factors as to why United shouldn't look Mourinho's way if in the near future Louis van Gaal leaves the club. Without further ado, let me go straight into those factors:

1. A Less Attractive Football Philosophy:

The Portuguese is famous for "winning ugly" with teams built on defensive solidity, he doesn't mind sacrificing entertainment for success. Also well-known for "parking the bus" and grinding out results, not minding whether the team plays beautiful football or not. Playing attractive football and producing results is one thing,
playing ugly and grinding results is another. The philosphy van Gaal is trying to invent at United is that of the former. There are also many other managers who combine beautiful football and positive results well out there.
Jose once said to a reporter, "Look, we're not entertaining? I don't care; we win." Appointing Jose Mourinho wouldn't have a remote change to the "attack, attack, attack" chants amongst United fans, because his system is a
defensive and ugly one.

2. Staying At The Top:

As Johan Cyruff once said, reaching the top isn't easy, but staying at the top is more difficult. Jose has till now not proved he can do that. Mourinho left both Porto and Inter after winning the Champions League

trophy, without ever trying to defend it. He left Chelsea after falling from the top, failing to win the 2006/2007 Premier League title and having a dismal start to the 2007/2008 season; which saw him eventually leave the club. Again, just recently, he parted company with Chelsea by "mutual consent" after breaking the record of the
worst title defense in the Premier League. Consistency and a manager that produces long-term success is what is
needed at Old Trafford right now, not a short-term manager - which Jose is.

3. Ability To Motivate His Squad, Restoring Confidence:

You might want to doubt this factor but it is one of Mourinho's weaknesses. It is always a difficult task for him to motivate players and bring back their confidence, once they've lost it. Sometimes, it's because he prefers to rely on experienced, established players - who have won almost everything - that have no hunger for 'more', instead

of giving youngsters - hungry for glory - a chance on the big stage. At United, our Academy is basic priority for us and we also need the confidence of the Sir Alex Ferguson era back in the team.
So, a "no-no" to appointing Mourinho.

4. Poor Relationship With Players:

This is one of his strongest shortcomings, managing players. Jose Mourinho's relationship with players he's managed is always having a rift - eventually leading to the players 'betraying' him. At Inter, his relationship with Balotelli was poor. At Real, he had far-from-healthy relationships with Sergio Ramos, Iker Casillas and

Cristiano Ronaldo. At Chelsea, he hot grumpy with Juan Mata, which led to his rare January move to rivals, United. I can go on and on to mention countless players Mourinho has had dressing room clashes with.
He is obviously a poor man-manager; not what we need at United.

Jose Mourinho has regularly been a manager that has brought curiosity (and hatred) in other managers and fans of other teams. The Portuguese clearly has a talent for the job he does, but his customary shows of cockiness in the press interests anyone.

None of this is meant to disrespect Mourinho or play down his great feats in his career but is just to express the heart of many of United faithfuls as regards the future of the club we love.
