Manchester United and the Bosman Ruling

James Adams - Staff Writer

Today marks the 20th Anniversary of the game-changing ruling that now means a player can leave for free when their contract expires. Although Manchester United haven’t signed many players on free transfers over the years - with Laurent Blanc and Michael Owen to name a couple – below are 3 players that United could target on a free this summer: Sofiane Feghouli (Valencia) The speedy Algerian midfielder who can play on either wing is surprisingly available on a free this summer and a contractual agreement with the player can be made in January. United would face competition from the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham for his signature, but they potentially have an added advantage now that a certain class of ’92 graduate is the Valencia boss. Feghouli, who only turns 26 on Boxing Day is predominately known for his pace and his ability when running at defenders (something United still need) however, he is also willing to contribute defensively and help the team out in their own half. Despite his pace, Feghouli still needs to work on his passing – currently has a 73.1% pass success rate in all competitions this season – and his goalscoring prowess, Feghouli has managed 3 goals in 15 appearances this season (WhoScored). Gregory Van der Wiel (PSG) The Dutch defender was consistently linked with United in the summer even after the Red Devils signed Matteo Darmian. Van der Wiel would provide a solid option at right back though and some competition for Darmian in the future. United’s full back position has been decimated with injuries this season and Van der Wiel, who is just 27, would offer some nice depth in a position that United have been struggling with this year. Van der Wiel would also offer an attacking threat and has produced 3 assists in just 10 appearances this year for PSG (WhoScored) along with 6 chances created (Squawka). The other benefit is that he knows Van Gaal’s system but I guess whether Van Gaal will still be there to welcome him is another story. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (PSG) Well, what is there to say about Zlatan? He is having another fantastic season even at the age of 34 and already has 14 goals and 6 assists in 13 Ligue 1 appearances this season (WhoScored). However, there are rumours gathering pace that he is set to extend his stay in Paris but if he does decide to leave, United could be a potential landing spot for the Swede - with an attitude and swagger comparable to Cantona there are certainly a few United fans that would love to see him at Old Trafford next season. Above are just 3 players that United could sign on a free this summer and although the Red Devils are likely to spend big again, are there any other players that you would like to see United to sign on a free?
