The Tides Have Turned

-Umeh

A poor second half performance saw United play out a goalless home draw against Dutch champions, PSV Eindhoven.

A match that Manchester United had all to play for to see them ease their task of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League round of 16 up against PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford turned out to be one of those games where the team play diminished as the game grew.

In the build-up to the game, United were definitely favorites to run out with all three points on the night following the return of players like Rooney, Darmian and Martial to the team set-up.

United started the game on a pretty positive note - unlike the LvG team that always grow into games. We were pressing high and garnering momentum from the back, up field.

United created some excellent opportunites in the first half. It was Lingard who was at the end of most of them, but was way too wasteful in front of goal. Martial had some good shots at goal too, but the PSV goalkeeper had
his own role to play in keeping the tie without a goal in the first half.

The first half came to an end and the fans were positive that United would emerge with a win at the end of the day.In the second half, the performance diminished. There was no run behind the opposition's defence, with the slowing down, minimal chances were created.

Based on the decline in the team's performance, midway into the second 45mins, Louis van Gaal was forced to make some changes; he made a double substitution by taking off Memphis and Schweinsteiger for Young and Fellaini.

The substitution didn't prove worth it as there was no improvement in the awful second half performance. The midfield became quite porous, giving PSV the freedom to hit us on the counter. Despite the drop in the second half performance, Smalling and De gea always had things covered at the back.

There was obviously a turn in tides: United's first half performance was promising but second half was far from good - it was a disastrous and lazy second 45 minutes by the team. We looked the better team in the first half but that changed in the second half.

The performance in the second half last night was totally frustrating for the fans and seemed to rhyme with critics that Paul Scholes has been pouring on Louis van Gaal's tactics.

Although the group is still wide open and United have all to play for when they travel to Germany for the last group game, and United must win to go through to the next round.
