Statistical Analysis of the Manchester Derby (25 October 2015)

-Pranav

Recent Form
After a disappointing draw against Moscow which may be considered satisfactory considering CSKA Moscow haven’t lost any home game in the champions league, Manchester United face the tough task of toppling the table toppers, who have been in stunning form recently especially with the inclusion of Kevin De Bruyne and Wilfred Bony. This, coupled with the sudden rise of Raheem Sterling, in the absence of Aguero, has led to Manchester City's rise to the top of the table.

The Midfield Dilemma

With questions being raised over Bastian Schweinsteiger's ability to cope with the pace of the Barclays Premier League, the following outlines some statistics:

With over 85% pass accuracy and almost 50% of all duels won, Bastian Schweinsteiger is definitely one of the best in the pack. However, Michael Carrick definitely provides an edge when it comes to chance creation and tactical interceptions.

The Defence

Matteo Darmian clearly outperforms Antonio Valencia in most aspects. This may be contradicted by recent form and the exclusion of Matteo Darmian against CSKA Moscow.

As compared with other full backs, I believe Marcos Rojo can earn himself a starting place in our lineup. Based on the following performance against Everton:

Two variations of the line-up I would like to see:

In conclusion, can we do it?

Yes, Manchester City might be in an exceptional form but Manchester United have a tendency to emerge stronger. Last season we faced a similar situation when City came to Old Trafford and we ended up winning 4-2.
