Manchester United vs Manchester City: Players' Ratings

-Owen Paiva

*Players that came on after 70 minutes are not rated.

David De Gea (6):
Not challenged much on the day but great when tested upon and did well to settle back passes.

Marcos Rojo (7):
Neutralized Kevin De Bruyne well, dealt with Navas, but conceded fouls in risky areas

Phil Jones (8):
Solid at the back. Played more of a sweeper, but cleaned up any City attacks that came his way. First to every 50-50 ball.

Chris Smalling (8):
More combative of the two center backs, helped keep the strength of Bony at bay. Dealt with the City attacks well.

Antonio Valencia (7):
Attacked well, though end product was lacking at times. Defended finely against the pace of Raheem Sterling, and the skill of De Bruyne. Injury forced him off.

Morgan Schneiderlin (8):
Broke up City’s attacks brilliantly. The central midfielder that United has needed since Keane retired.

Bastian Schweinsteiger (9):
Brilliant at both ends of the pitch, kept possession well. At one point so calm that he kept possession in his own penalty area, calmly turned and cleared it, instead of just booting it away.

Anthony Martial (8):
No complaints about his play. Double covered multiple times, yet managed to waltz through them almost every time. The back heel to Schweinsteiger was tremendous. Contributed a sublime pass to Lingard.

Ander Herrera (7):
The usually amazing attacking midfielder looked indecisive on the ball. Gave away the ball and struggled in the compact midfield. Performed defensive duties well.

Juan Mata (6):
Looked faded from the start. Understandable as Mata has played an unbelievable number of games in a row. This was far off from the in-form midfielder as we have seen lately.

Wayne Rooney (6):
Rooney has suffered under Van Gaal’s tactics and I feel this is the main reason in his sudden downturn in form. Rooney had some good touches and passes, but also had some passes to no-one or passes that just went to the other team. Rooney needs a spell on the bench to help motivate him.

Substitutions:

Jesse Lingard (7) [Mata 66’]:
Sent on to provide some fresh legs in search for a goal. Had best chance of the match and unlucky not to score the game-winner. Promising performance from the youngster.

Marouanne Fellaini (N/A) [Schweinsteiger 73’]:
Played well for when he was on, helped keep control of ball, and did what was asked of him.

Matteo Darmian (N/A) [Valencia 81’]:
Did well to defend, though he was not on long enough to make an impact.
