Manchester United got the season up and running with an extremely low tempo but picked up some good number of points in our first few games. In those games, the points came through an own goal, a deflection and a dismal defense.
It seems like the new era of the oft-philosophy, building the team into a conservative one. It has groomed the team into an inconsistent one.
Two Key Factors Behind United's Inconsistent Performances:
1. Lack Of Activity In The Final Third:
Despite how convincingly well our start to the season has been so far, we've had some games where we fail to create clear-cut goal scoring opportunities despite always having the bulk of the ball possession. It looks like the philosophy is one that borders more on conservative tactics - sit back and hold onto the ball -, no movement behind the opposition back line.
Most of the time, the team plays like it's already ahead of their opponents by a good goal margin, they tend to try and frustrate their counterparts, thereby - unknowingly - restricting fluidity in our offensive movements in the final third. It seems like the instruction from Louis van Gaal to the players most of the time is to hold up play more just inside the opposition half. There is no creativity in our offensive play. This is one a necessity of any team in the world that wants to win trophies.
2. Possession-based System:
The possession-based style has proved umpteen times this term that United frequently need to grow into games rather than getting off the hook and overwhelming their opponents from the blast of the whistle.
A system that has groomed most of our defenders and midfielders into lovers of back passes. In games where we've put up dismal displays, this case of back passes have been one of the main issue, failure to spring forward passes that can split up the opposition's defense. It is limpid that growing into games and starting games slowly is of adverse effect to the team; as was the case at the Emirates and when we've conceded early goals to the likes of Club Brugge and Wolfsburg (although we went on to win). There needs to be more tempo in the team play. That would be the only ideal way to improve the possession-based system.
Paul Scholes & Rio Ferdinand Agree That United Have Been Inconsistent Too:
"You look at the team, there is no quality, no movement. People are not running", the former United midfielder said. "It is the way they are told to play", Paul Scholes said. Rio Ferdinand also believes United have been too inconsistent this season. "The crazy thing for a United fan at the moment is that you don't know
the team that will turn up, the pedestrian one, on the team against Everton", he said.
In conclusion, inconsistency is a factor teams wish to avoid at best. Every world class team wants to be consistent; winning consecutive games, building on good performances and not doing well in one game and doing the exact opposite in the other. Obviously, something needs to be done about this pressing issue of inconsistency this season, and quickly - if there are any prospects of winning trophies.
