Prediction: Everton 2-1 United
The side we would like to see on Saturday:
De Gea
Jones Smalling
Valencia Darmian
Schneiderlin Fellani
Herrera
Depay Mata
Martial
The side we are more likely to see:
De Gea
Blind Smalling
Darmian Young
Schneiderlin Carrick
Rooney
Depay Mata
Martial
Let us start with the position which has been the center of transfer discussions and responsible for a huge amount of debate from the start of the season – Partnering Chris Smalling.
This season has seen Louis van Gaal turning to Daley lind to fill this role. Here is how Blind compares to last season’s Central Defenders after 8 games:
Daley Blind has played all 8 games but has not taken on any players as well as being the weakest player in the air, critical criteria for a Central Defender. Jones is a better selection as Central Defender. He has a higher success rate when it comes to tackling, not afraid to take players on, better at intercepting the ball and better in the air.
Ashley Young will play wherever Louis van Gaal tells him to but Matteo Darmian is an accomplished defender and can play both left and right back equally well. Apart from one bad mistake against Southampton, he has proven himself to be more than just useful at right back.
Young 1 4 (67%) 1 (50%) 0 1 0 0
Valencia 5 6 (50%) 3 (100%) 6 (55%) 3 0 5
However, it is in the midfield where Louis van Gaal is probably experiencing his biggest headache.
Wayne Rooney has been under performing the entire season, but at the same time is also the captain of the team, while there has been no real creative attacking assistance from the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick. You will expect these players to create the opportunity for Rooney and Depay to run onto a through ball or to spot Martial and Mata in open spaces and launch an attack from deep but it current has not turned out that way.
In order for Manchester United to fully utilize their new acquisitions (Memphis Depay & Anthony Martial), the midfielders have to either draw the defense to create space or disrupt the defensive line and allow these players to run in behind the defense.
Herrera 4 13
Rooney 7 24
Fellani 3 70 85
Schweinsteiger 8 36
Schneiderlin 7 36
Carrick 8 37
The stats show why United are unable to penetrate the opposition's defense. These 6 players have only contributed 2 goals so far this season. Rooney has had 14 attempts at goal and only scored 1. Herrera on the other hand had only 2 attempts and scored 1. He also made the second most key passes with 5, 3 behind Rooney, but 3 games less and 2 of his game coming on as a substitute.
Fellani not only provides United with an advantage from set plays due to his considerable height advantage, but adapts a more physical play as compared to Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Michael Carrick. 2 key passes and 2 attempts on goal in 3 games is far better than the combined effort of the above three who delivered a total of 8 key passes and 5 attempts in 8 games.
