An Insight to Rooney's Decline in Form

-Umeh

The United and England skipper was presented with the Golden Boot as England's all time top scorer from the man whose record he overtook, Sir Bobby Charlton. He broke the record of 49 goals after reaching his half century of goals with a penalty against Switzerland.

Every fan is worried about the United's captain off-form this season. Rooney has had only a 'somewhat' successful outing this season, against Club Brugge in the UCL playoffs where he scored a hat-trick ('somewhat' because his 3 goals on the night were the easiest to score in the world - tap-ins -, but some players do miss at times, so Wazza does deserve some credit, right?). A huge swathe of supporters were relieved that he is back to his original best. But, what has he done again since then?

In the first few matches, he was totally dismal as a lone striker for the team. The vital factors that won us crucial points in those first few matches were an own goal, a deflection and a resolute defence - and not Rooney. With the arrival of teenage sensation, Anthony Martial, Rooney has naturally been redeployed to his favorite no. 10 role since the ending of the Sir Alex Ferguson era at United; but till now, he is no better.

Rooney's days of being a world class Center Forward looks to have passed. He has now just scored one League goal in his last 13 apps. Sir Alex Ferguson, in his autobiography, complained about Rooney sometimes not being as sharp as he should be: "He has great qualities about him but they could be swallowed up by a lack of fitness", he said. Is that still an issue now? We keep wondering.

Effect of the Emergence of Anthony Martial on Rooney's slump in form:
Regrettable or Exciting?

In an angle, regrettable and on other hand, exciting; it looks like it's new Manchester United lynch pin, Anthony Martial. Regrettably, it looks to be the 19-year old starlet who creates the more spaces in games, saving Rooney of his blushes most of the times - but we all see Rooney's frailties no matter how Martial tries. But it is supposed to be Rooney who should mentor the prolific teenager and give him all the lifting he needs to grow into a phenomenal player for the club.

Excitingly, Martial looks to be the once sought after goal scorer for us, especially after the departure of Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez, coupled with Wayne Rooney's poor form.

In conclusion, I feel Wayne Rooney now plays a lot these days (both for club and country, and captain of both sides). However, every player will gradually age and outgrow his prime. Many supporters think its high time Manchester United did away with Rooney while others wait keenly to see a resuscitation in Rooney's form.

Personally, I think giving him less game time (and giving options like Fellaini and Herrera some game time) may revivify his all round play and trigger his usual best.

Unfortunately, a spark seems to have been blotted our from his game. You wonder if it will ever come back.
